About Dian Dou De
Dian Dou De is a Cantonese teahouse and dim sum restaurant chain operated by Guangzhou Dian Dou De Catering, whose origins go back to 1933, when Shen Shaoqing founded the Dexiang teahouse in the Longgui area of Guangzhou. The Shen family revived the brand in 2013 and reopened it in 2014 in the historic Xiguan district under its current name, a Cantonese saying roughly meaning that anything goes and everything is fine either way, a nod to its food and service.
Its concept renews the yum cha tradition: instead of limiting tea service to the morning, it serves it all day from a single menu, prepared by a team of more than three thousand dim sum chefs who have developed over seven hundred varieties. Signature items include shrimp dumplings and barbecued pork buns, whose making techniques are recognised as intangible cultural heritage, and the red rice roll with prawns, awarded for several years as an Asian landmark dish.
The chain has taken that format, with Xiguan-style interiors, to close to one hundred directly operated restaurants in around a dozen Chinese cities, including Shenzhen, Shanghai, Chengdu, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Wuhan. It is one of Guangzhou's most recognisable restaurant brands, holding time-honoured brand status and intangible heritage conservation status in its home city.
