About Songtsam Hotels & Resorts (Songtsam Group)

Songtsam is a luxury boutique hotel group born in Shangri-La, in the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan, founded in 2000 by Baima Duoji, a Tibetan documentary filmmaker. Its official English-language website presents a collection of Tibetan-style hotels and lodges spread across Yunnan, Tibet and Sichuan, strung along the ancient Tea Horse Road and the route to Lhasa, and designed as a circuit to be travelled from house to house.

The collection brings together two lines, Lodges and Retreats (Linka), with a dozen properties plus a glamping site: the first Songtsam Lodge Shangri-La, beside Songzanlin Monastery, and houses in Lijiang, Meili, Benzilan, Tacheng, Cizhong, the Nujiang Canyon, Bingzhongluo and Pu'er in Yunnan; retreats and lodges in Lhasa, Bome, Laigu, Rumei, Lake Basong and Namcha Barwa in Tibet; and a lodge in Yading, Sichuan. Its largest property, Songtsam Linka Kunming, offers 53 rooms beside Dianchi Lake.

Songtsam combines accommodation, Chinese, Tibetan and Western dining, cultural activities and its own tailor-made travel line, Songtsam Tours, which links the houses on circuits such as the Tea Horse Road expedition between Yunnan and Tibet. The group centralises bookings from Shangri-La, with the email info@songtsam.com and a Chinese reservations line, and stands out for employing mostly staff from the villages where each lodge sits, weaving the hotel into local life.
