About PINWU Design Studio

PINWU is a design studio founded in 2004 in Yuhang, Hangzhou, by designers Zhang Lei, Jovana Zhang and Christoph John, trained across China, Serbia and Germany. Its work starts from the deconstruction of traditional Chinese crafts and materials and applies them to fields such as furniture, product design, art installation and space, under a concept the founders call future tradition.

In furniture, the From Yuhang series translated techniques such as bamboo weaving, porcelain, paper and ramie fibre into contemporary chairs, tables and objects that have won international design awards. The studio also works with global fashion, automotive and home brands and develops brand strategy and exhibition curation.

PINWU is also behind the Róng Design Library, a non-profit library documenting Chinese craft materials and techniques in Qingshan Village, where the studio is based at Dongwu Hall. That dual commercial and research vocation makes it a reference point for craft-based Chinese design.
