About Hurun Report
Hurun Report is a Chinese research house and publishing group based in Shanghai, founded in 1999 by British chartered accountant Rupert Hoogewerf, the firm's chairman and chief researcher. It began as a research unit that published the first serious ranking of China's largest fortunes that year, and has grown into the most widely cited authority on Chinese wealth and entrepreneurship, working under the motto of promoting entrepreneurship through lists and research.
Its flagship product is the Hurun China Rich List, which in 2025 reached its twenty-seventh edition with 1,434 individuals worth more than CNY 5 billion, alongside the Hurun Global Rich List of the world's billionaires and its indexes of unlisted companies: the Hurun Global Unicorns Index, which ranks thousands of start-ups worldwide, and the Gazelles and Cheetahs future-unicorn indexes. The Hurun Research Institute also publishes sector and regional lists, philanthropy and brand rankings, and schools guides.
Alongside research, Hurun runs a luxury publishing arm — the Hurun Report magazine and guide series — and an active business events division aimed at entrepreneurs and high-net-worth individuals, including its annual awards ceremonies. From Shanghai it coordinates offices in other Chinese cities and an international presence in places such as Oxford and Mumbai, with its own editions such as the Hurun India Rich List.
